A. The description about Narrative Writing and How to Differ from Other Genres
Narrative text is a text the telling of a story : the succession of events is given in chronological order. The basic purpose of narrative
is to entertain, to gain and hold a readers' interest. However narratives can
also be written to teach or inform, to change attitudes / social opinions. Narratives
sequence people/characters in time and place but differ from recounts in that
through the sequencing, the stories set up one or more problems, which must
eventually find a way to be resolved.
- The different from other genres is the narrative text focusing
some specific participants that have several structural features. Narrative is
used most often in: Fables, Myths and legends, Detective stories, adventure stories, Thrillers, Period Dramas. Patterns in a simple narrative: beginning -
middle - end of early narratives usually contains introduction atmosphere and character
that is introduced. The early part must be made attractive in order to bind the
reader. The middle part is a part that gives rise to a conflict. Conflict then directed
towards the climax of the story. After conflict arises and reaches the climax, the
story gradually subsides. End of story has died down a variety of ways of
expressing. Some are told by long, some are short, and some are trying to drape
the end of the story with his own invited readers to guess.
- And to know the different narrative from
other genres is we can find from the following a specific structure like:
setting, characters, Problem, Events and the Resolution.
B. The Steps How To Make Narrative writing
Before making a narrative text, writer should
consider step by step in the
manufacture of the text. It aims
to: facilitate in
making an essay writer, guidelines that regular writing and
directed,
The depiction of the patterns and links between main
ideas / topics, Helping authors see
topics that stray from the topic and the presence of the same basic idea, Being a
general overview of the structure of essay ideas,
thus helping the collection of reference material needed.
The Steps to Make
Narrative Writing
1.
Decide on a topic --------- what is the story want to tell?
Look
over the list of suggestions or brainstorm a few of your own. Remember,a narrative is a story with characters, setting, problem, and solution.
Be sure to choose a story that has all the parts of a good narrative.
Example : My Great Experience
Answer
the questions who? What? Where? When? And Why? These questions help to narrow and
describe the setting before the problem or action takes place.
Use the center block of Four
Square to jot ideas for:
· Who
was there before the action?
· What
were they doing before the action?
· Where
were they before the action?
· When
does the story take place?
· Why
are these people there?
Setting
is important in many ways. Not only does it affect the action and events
in the story, but it can also affect the way characters act.
Example
: - In the village,
there was a girl named dwi astuti. She was the cheerful girl and spoiled girl.
She was me. In my lived I had so
many experiences. There are the good and the bad experience. From child hood
until adulthood, many memories that could not forgot.
-When I was in
junior high school, I had a dream
to become a midwife.
3.
Decide on the events of the story. These events should be
actions with strong, active verbs. If there is no action, there is no
story. Use the first three squares of the Four Square to outline the events that create the
plot. The fourth and final square is reserved for the “Big Ending”!
The “big ending” should give the outcome or solution to the problem that is
identified in the plot.
Example : I was not willing to continue my education. And I decided to stop my
education until one year. My father’s always gave me motivation to
continue my studied, and he always asked me to keep my spirit. Because it, I
try to changed my mind. And I would made my family proud of me, so I continue
my studied in the Muhammadiyah University of Metro especially in English
department.
4.
Details, Details, Details
Details
are the way to elaborate on the events that create the plot. These
important bits are the way to explain “what happened” and “how it
happened”. Think of how it would be if a friend tried to tell you what
happened in a movie you have not seen without any details of what and how
things happened. You would not understand the movie. Details help
the reader to see what you see.
Remember
that each square of the Four
Square represents a new event, and you should take the time
to really detail each event before moving to the next.
Example : When I graduate
from the senior high school around 2011, I felt happy because my family had
allowed me to continue my studied in the midwife faculty. But, when I would do
the registration, my grandmother was sick. And the costs for the payment to my
education used for the treatment of my grandmother’s. Therefore, I had decided
to continue my studied in the STAIN. At the time, I had received in the STAIN. But, when I would re-registration, my
family had the problem. The problem is I lost both my motorcycles in the next
morning. It was made me felt hopeless and at the time, I was not willing to
continue my education. And I decided to stop my education until one year.
My father’s always gave me motivation to continue my studied, and he
always asked me to keep my spirit. Because it, I try to changed my mind. And I
would make my family proud of me, so I continue my studied in the Muhammadiyah
University of Metro especially in English department.
Connectors are
a good way to connect the events in the story. They are used to
show the time relationship between the events. Connectors have a dramatic
effect. In one story it may be meaningful if something happens immediately. In another
story, if something happens 10
years later, it may be equally shocking.
Add the
connector words to the top, left corner of each of the squares in the Four Square.
Example : one year ago, at the time,
6. Add “ Vivids “
Vivids” are those words that
add life to your writing. They bring the reader to the scene of the
story. Vivid language lets the reader know what the writer sees, hears,
feels, smells and tastes. Vivids include clear, concise and “vivid” adjectives
to describe people or things. Clear adverbs help to clarify when, where,
why or how certain actions or events occurred. Specific
nouns let the reader see what you see, strong, select verbs demonstrate the
actions of the characters just as you want them to be.Remember to include
dialogue to express mood, feeling, emotion and point of view.
Figurative language and sensory imagery are also excellent examples of
vivids. To help select your vivids, ask yourself “like what?” when
telling about an event. Choose vivids that show, not tell. Select
appropriate vivids at appropriate times in the story. Don’t force vivids
in, just to have them in your story; they are only useful when they add
strength to the writing.
Vivids are placed just below each of the details outlined for
each event in the Four Square.
Example : I felt happy when
saw people worked in the health world,
It was made me felt hopeless and
at the time, I was not willing to continue my education.
Remember the purpose of the narrative is to entertain the
reader. It is important to attract the reader’s attention right from the
start so they want to read the story. On way to attract the reader is to
use a “hook”. A “hook” is a one-sentence device placed at the beginning
of the story and generate curiosity in the reader. The “hook” is then
followed by the setting paragraph, the event paragraphs and the conclusion
paragraph.
Example : I would be wasting this
opportunity. I would make my
family proud of me.
Or you can make with
another step:
Example: once upon a time ago there was a beautiful
girl in the small village.
4.
Make the topic become topic sentence
Example; Romeo love Juliet until they are
pas away.
5.
Develop it with supporting sentence
Example: Romeo not rich people but juliet
always love romeo.
6.
And the last is controlling idea to control your sentences.
